Red Betty Theatre Presents Cockroach, a devised play by the company for Supercrawl 2017!

It was only in the late 1960s that Canada opened its borders to immigrants of colour. The entrance bar was set very high that meant doctors, lawyers, engineers and the like were accepted to enter with their families but as their qualifications meant nothing in Canada they were had to work for minimum wage until they could afford to retrain or take exams to re-qualify themselves.

Cockroach is a lighthearted immigration story that follows a family from India and their journey finding a home in the 70s. It is a devised theatre piece that has emerged from the ground up with the performers and the production team. This work explores the culture shocks and struggle that still exist within immigrant families travelling across the seas to settle down in Canada.
